You arrive at a beautiful viewpoint. There is a foreground rock with great texture, a middle-ground stream, and a mountain on the horizon. You want all three sharp in one photo. You set f/16, focus on the rock, take the shot — and the mountain looks soft. Refocus on the mountain, and the rock goes soft.
The fix has been used by landscape photographers for over a century: hyperfocal distance. It is one of the most useful — and most misunderstood — concepts in landscape work. This guide explains what hyperfocal distance actually is, how to find it without doing maths in your head, and when to use it instead of focus stacking.
What Hyperfocal Distance Actually Means
Hyperfocal distance is the closest distance you can focus at, where everything from half that distance to infinity is acceptably sharp.
A Plain-English Example
Imagine you’re shooting a landscape with a 24mm lens at f/11. The hyperfocal distance for that combination is roughly 2 metres. If you focus on something 2 metres away, everything from 1 metre to infinity will be sharp in the photo. Focus closer than 2 metres and the horizon goes soft. Focus on the horizon and your foreground goes soft.
Why It Works
Depth of field — the range of distances that look acceptably sharp — extends roughly one third in front of the focus point and two thirds behind it. Focus at infinity and you waste two thirds of the depth of field on empty sky. Focus at the hyperfocal distance and you maximise everything you can use.
The Three Things That Change Your Hyperfocal Distance
Hyperfocal distance isn’t a fixed number. It depends on three settings.
1. Focal Length
Wide lenses have shorter hyperfocal distances. A 16mm lens at f/11 has a hyperfocal of about 0.9m. A 50mm lens at f/11 has a hyperfocal of about 8m. Wider lenses are easier to keep everything sharp.
2. Aperture
Smaller apertures (higher f-numbers) shorten the hyperfocal distance. f/16 has a closer hyperfocal than f/8. The trade-off is diffraction — most lenses get slightly softer past f/16, so f/11 is the sweet spot for most landscape work.
3. Sensor Size
Full-frame, APS-C and Micro Four Thirds cameras have different hyperfocal distances for the same lens, because the “acceptable circle of confusion” is different on different sensor sizes. The numbers above are for full-frame; for APS-C, multiply distances by roughly 1.5; for MFT, multiply by 2.
The Easy Way to Find Hyperfocal Distance
Forget the maths. There are two practical ways to nail it in the field.
Method 1: A Smartphone App
PhotoPills, DOFMaster and Hyperfocal Pro all have a depth-of-field calculator. Type in your camera, focal length and aperture and they tell you the exact hyperfocal distance. Free or under £10 each.
Method 2: The “Double the Closest Thing” Rule
If you don’t have an app, here’s a field rule that gets you 90% there. Find the closest object you want sharp. Estimate how far away it is. Double that distance — and focus there. With a wide lens at f/11, this gets you within striking distance of true hyperfocal.
Method 3: One-Third Into the Frame
For a landscape with a clear foreground, middle ground and background, focus roughly one-third of the way into the scene. It’s a rough rule but it works for most wide-angle landscapes.
How to Set Focus to Hyperfocal in the Field
Knowing the distance is half the battle. The other half is getting your camera to focus there reliably.
Switch to Manual Focus
Autofocus needs something to lock onto. The hyperfocal point is often empty grass or a featureless rock. Switch to manual focus to set it deliberately.
Use Live View and Magnify
On a tripod, switch to live view, magnify by 10x, and adjust focus until the area at hyperfocal distance is razor sharp. This is far more accurate than the viewfinder.
Mark the Distance on the Lens (If You Have a Distance Scale)
Some older or pricier lenses have a distance scale on the barrel. You can dial in the hyperfocal distance directly. Most modern lenses don’t have this — focus by eye instead.
Take a Test Shot and Check
Take a frame, zoom into the LCD at 100% on the foreground and on the horizon. Both sharp? Job done. Either soft? Adjust focus slightly and try again.
When Hyperfocal Distance Isn’t Enough
Hyperfocal works for most landscape scenes — but some scenes need a different approach.
Very Close Foregrounds
If your foreground rock is 30cm from the lens, hyperfocal won’t save you. The depth of field at that distance is only a few centimetres. Use focus stacking instead — take three or four shots at different focus points and blend them in Photoshop.
Telephoto Landscapes
At 100mm or longer, hyperfocal distances become enormous (50m plus). For telephoto landscape work, just focus on the most important subject and let depth of field cover the rest.
When You Need Maximum Sharpness Front-to-Back
For competitions or large prints, focus stacking gives sharper results than hyperfocal because you’re not asking any single shot to do all the work. Hyperfocal is a great starting technique; focus stacking is the next step up.
Practical Hyperfocal Examples by Lens
Here are the hyperfocal distances on a full-frame camera at f/11, the workhorse aperture for most landscape work. Memorise the ones that match your kit and you’ll have a usable starting point in the field.
Wide-Angle Landscapes
16mm: 0.9m. 20mm: 1.4m. 24mm: 2m. 28mm: 2.7m. These short distances mean you can focus on something just a few steps in front of you and still keep the horizon sharp.
Standard Lenses
35mm: 4.2m. 50mm: 8m. 85mm: 23m. At 50mm you’re focusing roughly halfway to the middle of the scene. At 85mm, hyperfocal is far enough that you may as well focus on your subject directly.
Adjust for Your Aperture
If you shoot at f/8 instead of f/11, the hyperfocal distance roughly doubles. At f/16 it roughly halves. The relationship is close enough that you can ballpark it without a calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my landscape look sharp on the LCD but soft when I open it on my computer?
The camera’s rear screen is small and forgiving. Open the file at 100% on a computer monitor and any focus error becomes obvious. Always check your hyperfocal shots zoomed in on the LCD before you leave the location.
Can I use hyperfocal for portraits?
You can, but it’s rarely useful. Portrait work usually wants the eye sharp and the background blurred — hyperfocal does the opposite. Save it for landscapes and street photography where front-to-back sharpness is the goal.
Does hyperfocal work for night photography?
Yes — but you need to find a bright spot in the scene to focus on first (a streetlight, the moon, a star). Once focused there, recompose without changing the focus ring. Or use a torch to illuminate something at hyperfocal distance and focus on that.
What about “focus to infinity”?
Many beginners default to focusing on the horizon. This wastes two-thirds of your depth of field on empty sky. Focus at hyperfocal instead and you’ll keep the horizon sharp while gaining metres of usable foreground sharpness.
Why don’t modern lenses have a distance scale anymore?
Mirrorless lenses focus by wire (electronic focus motors) and modern manufacturers prioritised autofocus speed over physical distance markings. A few specialist lenses (Voigtländer, Zeiss Loxia) still include them, mostly for landscape and street photographers who use hyperfocal regularly.
