Leica R Cameras for Precision Lens Performance
Leica R was the company’s 35mm SLR system, and it was discontinued in 2009. The bodies are film cameras, so this is a second-hand proposition rather than a current option – but the R lenses are the reason the system is still talked about, and they adapt cleanly onto mirrorless bodies, which is how most people use them now.

Leica TL Cameras for Stylish Simplicity
Leica TL was the APS-C system built around a machined aluminium body and a touchscreen back, and it ended in 2022 when Leica retired the L-mount APS-C line. The bodies still work, and the TL lenses fit any L-mount camera, so the range is worth knowing about second-hand rather than new. The TL2 was the last of them, at 24 megapixels.
Leica V Cameras for Vintage Charm
The Leica V-Lux is the odd one out in the range: a bridge camera with a fixed superzoom lens, built on a Panasonic body and finished to Leica’s specification. It is nothing to do with the rangefinders elsewhere in this guide, and it is the Leica to buy if you want one camera that covers everything on a walk without changing lenses.
Specifications:
- Sensor: 1-inch CMOS sensor
- Resolution: 20.1 megapixels
- ISO range: 80-12,500, expandable to 25,000
- Autofocus: contrast-detect AF with face detection
- Viewfinder: OLED electronic viewfinder, not a rangefinder
- Shutter: mechanical and electronic shutters
- Continuous shooting: up to 12 frames per second
- Lens: fixed Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 25-400mm equivalent, F/2.8-4. There is no lens mount – the lens does not come off
Strengths:
- Exceptional image quality
- Timeless retro design
- Robust build quality
- Wide range of Leica lenses
Leica X Cameras for Street Photography
Leica X was the fixed-lens APS-C compact line, and it finished in 2017. The X Typ 113 paired a 16-megapixel APS-C sensor with a fixed 35mm-equivalent F/1.7 lens, which is exactly the recipe street photographers still like, so it has held its value second-hand. Nothing in the X line is current.
A note on the Leicaflex, since it comes up: it was Leica’s 35mm SLR, built between 1964 and 1976, and it took R-mount lenses. It is not medium format – Leica has never made a medium-format camera – and it has not been in production for half a century, so it is a second-hand film proposition rather than something to buy new.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Leica known for?
Exceptional build quality, minimalist design, superb lenses, and the classic rangefinder shooting experience, all at a premium price.
Are Leica cameras worth the money?
For those who value the build, optics and deliberate shooting experience, yes; for pure specs-per-pound, other brands offer more. It is as much about the experience as the images.
What is a rangefinder camera?
A camera that focuses using a manual rangefinder mechanism rather than autofocus through the lens. It encourages a slower, more considered way of shooting, and Leica is the most famous maker.
Are Leica cameras good for beginners?
They can be, but the manual rangefinders have a learning curve and the price is high. Beginners on a budget are usually better served elsewhere first.
Do you need Leica lenses on a Leica?
Leica’s own lenses are part of the appeal and reputation, but adapters let you use other lenses too. The native glass is a big reason people choose Leica.
