Three days photographing historic York, the seaside charm of Whitby and the ruins of Fountains Abbey — with hands-on tuition every step of the way, and no flight required.
4–8 July 2027 · Small group · Places very limited
It's a fully immersive, expertly led experience designed to help you grow as a photographer in real time — with hands-on guidance, in-depth teaching, and creative support every step of the way. In one trip you'll cover a medieval city, a dramatic seaside town, and ancient abbey ruins with landscape gardens — and come home with a genuinely varied set of images and the confidence to find great shots anywhere you go next.
The aim is simple: photographs that feel unmistakably Yorkshire — not generic travel shots you could have taken anywhere.
A calm, supportive pace — a comfortable York base, gentle walks with plenty of breaks, and easy transport between locations.
The evening before · Arrival
We gather in the evening at our city-centre hotel for a welcome drinks reception — a relaxed chance to meet Stephen and the rest of your small group over a drink before the shooting begins.
Day one · York
A full day photographing the historic heart of York on foot — the medieval City Walls, the famous Shambles and the mighty York Minster. We round the day off with a secret evening activity: a chance to put the camera down and simply enjoy the charms of York with your group.
Day two · Whitby
We travel together by private transport to the seaside town of Whitby — a whole day of classic English coast to photograph. The working harbour, the beach, the charming old town, and the dramatic ruins of Whitby Abbey on the headland.
Day three · Fountains Abbey
Our final day of shooting takes us by private transport to the magnificent Fountains Abbey and the Studley Royal water gardens — one of the finest abbey ruins in the country, set in a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Back in York that evening, we share a warm farewell meal together to round off the trip.
Itinerary is subject to slight change depending on weather and availability.
Stephen is iPhotography's Head Tutor and the friendly face behind countless photo walks across the UK and workshops further afield, including the USA. An award-winning portrait, street & landscape photographer who's been behind the camera for two decades, he's spent years leading photographers on location — and it's where he's happiest. Born and raised in the North West of England, he's photographed every location on this trip before and knows them well. He brings the same warmth, patience and structure that runs through every iPhotography course to each trip he leads, specialising in outdoor photography and post-processing (and he's been featured by Adobe & Skylum along the way). Expect plenty of encouragement and that "lightbulb moment" when it all clicks.

We stay together at Dean Court Hotel — a characterful hotel set within York's ancient city walls, just steps from York Minster, so the historic city is right on your doorstep. Each guest has their own private en-suite room (no mandatory sharing), with breakfast included each morning — plus a warm farewell group meal together on the last night.
York is on the East Coast Main Line — direct trains from London King's Cross take around 2 hours, with fast links from Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester & Birmingham.
Leeds Bradford (LBA) is the closest airport; Manchester (MAN) offers the widest choice, with a direct train onward to York in around 1h30.
York is well served by the A1(M) & A64. The city centre is largely pedestrianised, with Park & Ride and public car parks nearby (parking details confirmed on booking).
We're the world's friendliest photography club, and we want this trip to work for you. Each day's workshop runs around 5–6 hours and we're on our feet and moving for much of it — often covering up to around 3 miles in a day. We build in plenty of breaks, but it's worth thinking about your mobility and how comfortable you are walking around for a full day. Here's an honest look at each day so you can judge what suits — and please talk to us about any needs before you book.
Flat, paved and compact. Some cobbled streets, but all the key views are reachable at street level with short, easy walks and plenty of places to rest.
The most physical day. The Abbey approach and the famous 199 Steps involve climbs, and the town is hilly. There's a flat harbour-front base for anyone who'd rather skip the steps — you'll still get wonderful shots.
A level-access route runs from the West Gate car park to the abbey and water garden, and a complimentary buggy service operates through the day (subject to availability), so this is one of the easier, more inclusive days.
Transport between locations is provided throughout. If you have mobility, health or dietary needs, just get in touch before booking — we'll happily talk through the details and help you get the most from every day.
The companion rate covers the 4-night hotel, daily breakfast, the farewell meal, and the welcome reception drinks. Please book your companion upfront on your selected trip. Places are very limited.
